Dental Health Inequalities.Youth and adult Uruguayan Population (except Montevideo)
Resumen
Objective: To obtain information about oral health of youth and adult Uruguayan population. To analyze the association between oral health status and socioeconomic factors. Method: Cross-sectional study carried out among 418 ys 15-24 individuals, 229: 35-44 and 275: 65-74:275, a stratified cluster sampling design with 6 domains (3 groups of age and 2 regions: Montevideo, the capital and all the other provinces). A clinical examination base on the WHO criteria and a questionnaire were carried out. The main variables studied were Caries, Periodontal disease, Maloclussions and Oral mucosa condition (outcomes). Independent variables included general and oral health behavioral factors and socioeconomic conditions (educational level, occupation, major appliances and household goods, and domestic service). Result: Dental caries and Periodontal status of 922 individuals ( 15-24, 35-44 and 65-74 ys) from all regions of Uruguay except Montevideo is informed by a country wide survey. The mean DMFT were=4.4(95porcientoCI:4-4,8), 15.2(95porcientoCI:14-16.4) and 4.0 (95porcientoCI:22,8-25-2) for those aged 14-24, 35044 and 65-74 years of age respectively. Proportion of diseased sextants (CPI) with periodontal pockets with 4 mm or more are 5,6 (95porciento CI: 5,4-5,8) and 0,4 (95porciento CI: 0,2-0,6) ; 3,8 (95porciento CI 3,4-4,2) and 0,7( 95porcientoCI:0,5-0,9) 1.6(95porciento CI 1,4-1,8) and 0,5 (95porcientoCI:0,3-0,7) respectively. Statistical significant associations between oral diseases and socioeconomic conditions were identified. Households in which one or more individuals have University studies presented lower scores of dental caries than those without this characteristic. The opposite was observed when analyzing dental health status (FT+ST). Conclusion: The first national survey in youth and adult population was carried out and all data will be available soon. This preliminary information allowed us to report that oral health inequalities have been found but they should be studied in depth including other socio-economic factors using multivariable multilevel analysis.
